Simon Maria Kubiena was born in Vienna in 1998 and was introduced to filmmaking through acting, both at the Burgtheater in Vienna and in Austrian film productions. He participated in several film and acting workshops, including one at the Prague Film School.


Since autumn 2019 he has been studying directing for fictional film at the Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg, where he wrote „The carousel“, which was shortlisted for the german young screenwriters award 2020.

Simon is a scholarship holder of the Baden-Württemberg Stiftung and attended the film school La Fémis in Paris as part of an exchange semester.

His short films were presented at film festivals worldwide as PÖFF Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival and DIAGONALE - Festival of Austrian Film among others. His latest short film "Blaues Rauschen" had its premiere at 72. BERLINALE.
